Resilient infrastructure and asset management

This research theme focuses on transitioning from the traditional practice of maintaining the individual asset in good condition to the emerging practice that considers optimizing the system for minimal disruption and maintaining assets in a good condition.

The transition to a system-based asset management approach requires a clear understanding of the exposure of assets to hazards, their response during extreme events, and the consequences to overall network mobility when a single asset is damaged or fails. The research will provide NCDOT with a proactive approach to inform resilience-based decision making within their existing asset management system and a pathway to scale this information out for broader network level planning and prioritization.
